As a non-traditional student my reasons for returning to school go beyond the average student’s.
I’ve been fortunate in that I had a career that I enjoyed and defined me for 15 years. Unfortunately today’s economic problems and technology crossed my path and I had to find a new direction.
My former boss passed away last week and it made me reflect on the years I spent working under his direction. He ran a successful company and taught me a lot about hard work, integrity and respect. He hired me without a college degree and gave me an opportunity to succeed, and I’m proud to say, I never let him down. I could tell he was so proud of my accomplishments and how I had grown within the company. After his retirement, the company was bought out by a larger corporation that eventually ran into problems and had to close our facility. He spent over 40 years building his company and I can imagine his disappointment to see it close. I remember him coming by and wishing us all well in hopes that we could find new jobs. He even checked on me periodically through phone calls and yes even Facebook to see how I was doing. And, he was proud of my decision to return to school.
So that brings me back to my reasons for returning to school. People of his caliber are rare and nowadays in order to be given a chance at a great career the degree really matters. I’ve embarked on a new road to take me into new opportunities, new challenges and a new definition for myself.
As I look back and reflect on the great memories of my former career, I also look ahead at all the great opportunities that await me.
Past, present and future.
